Dear Reader,
It was cold, again. Ice didn’t cover our shoes, water didn’t cover our sleeping bags, but gloves still covered our hands. Until we had to tie our shoes. Then we took our gloves off. We woke up at 0530 to put away the tent so we could leave by 0700. All Goshawks were ready by 0630 but everyone else was still packing up so we waited. Elk found a plastic water bottle in our campsite and we had to do 20 pushups. (I did it this time.) When everyone was done putting stuff away, it was 0730. We left for Julian. Thirty minutes later, we arrived. We got a very quick review of the rules, and the patrols and the patrols split up at 0804. No leaders accompanied the patrols. We traveled from plaque to plaque, historical building to historical building. We tried interview after interview but most people refused interviews because everyone was opening shops or going to work. Forty-four minutes in, Joseph was able to interview a waiter at a restaurant called Miner’s Diner. It had a creepy animatronic in the front window. We all agreed on that.
After a bunch of walking and running, writing, and jogging, logging, and trotting, we arrived at St. Elizabeth of Hungary at 0939. While Joshie and I started compiling and writing the exploration report, Gavin interviewed some locals who were walking around.
In total, we got two plant samples, two interviews, a bunch of clues on suspects, and a report. We turned in our report around 1010. Although it was super windy, since we were going to mass in a few minutes, we all took off our coats and put our stuff in Hedgehog’s van. When we went into the church, we realized how tiny the church was. (It was REALLY small.) We all squished into a single pew. When too many parishioners started entering the church, the leaders and our patrol moved outside to make more room inside. Since all of our coats were in the car, the wind was kind of rough.
The mass finished and we all formed up outside somewhere near the parking lot. The group took a group picture and everyone said goodbye to leave. We were all in line for the bathroom-since the ride home was long-so it was kind of weird. We all got in Hedgehog’s van and left when everyone for our van was ready.
In two hours, we were back at Hedgehog’s house. It was a great trip. Snow. Cold. Ice. People. Everyone slowly departed as their rides arrived. Then, Joseph and I departed, and now I have nothing else to say because I left. (Thomas Hawthorne’s murderer was Charles Groskof.)
