Dear Reader,

It was cold. Ice covered our shoes, water covered our sleeping bags, and gloves covered our hands. Until we had to tie our shoes. Then we took our gloves off.

We woke up at 0630 and got out of the tent to start cooking breakfast. Since we were using Joshie’s GIANT mega propane stove to cook, we had to carry the heavy thing all the way from Hedgehog’s van to the picnic table we had for our campsite. For some reason, the picnic table was farther from the tent site then it should have been. We also had to bring the cooler full of food to the picnic table which was also kind of heavy. Maybe it just felt heavy because we were walking through 4-6 inch deep snow.

Everything was set up when we started cooking breakfast because if it wasn’t set up, we couldn’t even start. For breakfast, Gavin, our cook, had brought bacon which we fried, potatoes which we sauteed, and eggs which we hard boiled. Soon, the sun rose which changed the temperature to around 40 or 50°.

After we ate breakfast, the two troops got together to talk about what redline is and the different types of skits and how to perform them well. Skits consist of spuds, pantomime, straight acting, puppets, click-clack, shadow, and narration.

The patrols were dismissed to cook lunch. For lunch, we had polish sausage in salad using Andrew’s salad dressing which he made for the requirement. While we were cooking lunch, we were assigned a prompt and method of presentation to act out after. We were assigned to do a pantomime skit portraying a part of the Odyssey. Joshie was the only one who knew the Odyssey well, and he decided which part of the Odyssey we would act out. We did the part where Achilles dies. After rehearsing three times, we met at the campfire and performed. We were told to move slower, and put more emphasis on certain actions. We were also told to outline objects with our hands.

After all of the patrol’s skits, we talked about the exploration the leaders had set up for us the following day. A guy named Thomas Hawthorne got murdered in a town called Julian and there were six suspects; Elinor Baylee, Markus Robertson, Victoria, Frederick Levi, and Charles Grospkof. The criminal will not be revealed until the end. And the story is historical fiction. None of the characters are real.

When the exploration talk was over, Joseph, Joshie, Thomas, and I went on a hike near a half frozen pond. I feared falling through ice into the pond, but we never actually walked over the pond. We found a group of boulders where we took pictures and hung out for a bit. We returned to camp later.

Maverick and Gavin had court of honors planned that trip so Joseph and Joshie went to them. I was in charge of boiling water for dinner. We had free time until the court of honors were done and we had to cook dinner. Everyone in the Goshawk patrol went somewhere and played with snow while I stayed at camp to relax. I boiled water on the stove, built a nice little snowman, and sat on a bench. The court of honors went longer than expected so I turned off the stove in order to preserve propane.

When Gavin’s court of honor was done, (he passed), we started cooking dinner which consisted of beef, potatoes and sausages since we had extra. When Joseph and Joshie returned, we ate dinner and prepared to leave the next day. The two troops went to the campfire to say the rosary. We had to go to sleep early because daylight saving time was going to steal an hour from us. After the rosary, we put things away we wouldn’t need for Sunday like, the stove, our food cooler, our dishes, and mess kits.

When all was done, we went to sleep.
